University of Turku
University of Turku is one of the largest universities in Finland. It is located in the historical city of Turku in the South-Western Finland. Life sciences, including molecular medicine, are the main research areas in the University of Turku. The local research infrastructure includes up-to-date facilities in biological imaging, proteomics, bioinformatics, model organisms, and genomics.
The University of Turku participates in the MetaFight project by providing the facilities and experties of professor Jyrki Heino's research group. This group has for several years developed novel tools to improve quantitative analysis of cellular and molecular functions related to cell adhesion and integrin-type receptors. These functions play essential role in cancer metastasis and the new methods can be used, for example, in screening and analysing putative inhibitory molecules during the early stages of drug development. Especially live cell imaging and development of computer programmes, such as BioimageXD, are performed as part of Metafight.
